Yuendumu is one of the most active centres for print
making in the whole of the central and western Desert.
Warlukurlangu Artists in 1997 began exploring print
making with senior Yuendumu artists and in 1998 a workshop
was held with master printers from Northern Editions (Charles
Darwin University).
Since then, Yuendumu artists have produced limited edition
prints in the form of silk screen prints and etchings
and there are now over 50 print editions produced from
collaboration between Warlukurlangu artists, Northern
Editions and other printers.
In 2003 the artists of Yuendumu completed a beautiful
suite of 12 etchings, following on from the success of
an earlier set - see our page on the Fire
and Water Suite.
All prints are for sale and are warranted
by us to be as described (see the Shopping
and online security policy). The prices shown are

Jakamarra has depicted four of his most important Dreamings. They are Ngapa (Water), Pampardu (Flying Ant) Janganpa (Possum) and Ngalyipi (Snake Vine) The first Dreaming Ngapa comes from a place called Wapurtali, Mt. Singleton, west of Yuendumu. The short dashes represent clouds, the flowing lines flooded waters. This Ngapa Jukurrpa travelled to Mirrawarri, through Wapurtali. The Pamapardu story is in the middle of the painting. The pamapardu (Flying Ant) story is from Wilyiki (close to Mt Singleton). These flying ants get flushed out of their mingkirri (ant mounds) when it rains heavily. They sprout wings and fly off to find dry areas to rebuild their colonies The country associated with the Janganpa is Mawurrji, a water soakage created in the Dreamtime The possum was watching women as they were collecting food and water at Mawurrji. The curved lines are the tracks left by the possum's tail with the "E" shape foot prints (wirliya). The last story is of Ngalyipi or Snake Vine which is traditionally collected and made into rope. |

The Jukurrpa for Lukarrara travels north form Winparku to Darwin. The yawalyu (sacred dancing) design for Lukarrara is painted on women's bodies during the Jardiwampa ceremony and is painted on the parraja (food carriers) which they dance with. The circles represent soakages and also the plant. The long lines are the seed and the short lines are the roots. The seed is ground up, mixed with water and left in the sun to bake into bread. |

The site of this Jukurrpa (Dreaming) is Ngarlu, a pirli (rock hill) south east of Yuendumu. It is where a Jungarrayi man fell in love with a Napangardi woman, a taboo relationship under the Warlpiri skin group system (his mother-in-law). Japaljarri and Jampijinpa men were travelling east to Kurpurrulu. A Jungarrayi man called Lintyipilinti watched a woman from where he sat whilst she was urinating. He was so impressed with what he saw that he decided to woo her. His imprint has been left in the rocks which reminds the people of his thinking. Whilst he was sitting at Yumurruluwanu he spun some wirriji (hair string) and sang a love song. He also sent a bird to the Napangardi woman with the magic to entice her. When the two met at Ngarlu they made love and as a result of the taboo relationship were turned to stone. They are seen in the rocks at Ngarlu: a long water hole with a broken boulder reminds people of this union. |
